昨夜は非常に暑くて室温が 35 度もあったのでクーラーを 2 時間の切タイマーにして寝たら、3 時頃に目が醒めてしまった。幸い、今日は帰宅後から雨が降り、気温も下がった(といっても、室温 32 度ある)。
YouTube で "My name is Giovanni Giorgio, but everybody calls me Giorgio" というナレーションと共に不思議なことが起きる(モーターボートに牽引されていたゴムボートが浮くとか)動画がいろいろ suggest されてきて、ジョジョの奇妙な冒険由来の meme なのかなと思ったが、まったく関係ないらしい。
国会図書館デジタルライブラリにある古い本のスキャンを電子ペーパで読むために 4 階調化したりするとき、ImageMagick で -colorspace Gray -level 55%,75% -depth 2 などとするとわりといい感じにはなるんだけど、照明にムラがある場合、影が残ったり文字の太さが場所によって変わってしまう。なんかいい方法ないかなあ。Median filter で背景を得て減算とかも考えたが、あまりきれいに引けなかった。
Chemical crystallography at synchrotron beamlines
I asked a protein crystallography synchrotron beamline to collect datasets from small molecule crystals too small for in-house X-ray generators but too large for MicroED. The data quality was wonderful! I am very impressed. The beam size was 10x10 um. This reinforced my view that if X-ray diffraction is possible, X-ray is faster, simpler and more accurate than MicroED. The only problem is the beam time availability. Most small molecule beamlines put priorities to special environment crystallography (e.g. high pressure). We need mail-in, remote data collection and rapid access beamtime allocation for chemical crystallography as in macromolecule beam lines.
Of course you can crash larger crystals for MicroED, but MicroED data collection takes time. Crystals sometimes have preferred orientations and don't give 100 % completeness even when many crystals are merged. Element assignment is sometimes non-trivial. Detectors are not as good as EIGER (unless the scope owner allows you to use Falcon4i or Apollo for MicroED). Dynamical refinement is not always practical.
I do enjoy MicroED, but I reserve MicroED for cases X-ray cannot handle.
syslog のゴミを消す
"Can't update stage views actor" という Gnome-shell のエラーとか Slack の "Please make sure it has an appropriate as value and it is preloaded intentionally" というエラーとか Chrome の "chrome and gnome-terminal have no capability of surrounding-text feature" というエラーとか、無害なのにやたらとうっとうしいログが syslog に溢れるので、"Is there a way to suppress one specific message from syslog?"に従って、
:msg,contains,"has no capability of surrounding-text feature" ~ :msg,contains,"Can't update stage views actor" ~
という内容の /etc/rsyslog.d/01-bloccklist.conf ファイルを作って対策した。
Slack については、"slack: fix verbose logs"にある通り、/usr/share/applications/slack.desktop にて Exec=/usr/bin/slack -s %U と -s を追加して対応した。

18-19 世紀のイギリスの政治家 Mad Jack Fuller の紹介。二分足らずの映像だが、とりさんがイギリスの好きなところが全部詰まってる。アナウンサーのしゃきしゃきした RP 発音。ファラデーを支援していたという科学史へのつながり。この人が変わりもので死後の世界を信じていたため、教会の墓地にピラミッドを立ててそこに安置されているらしい。教会の周りの風景も 100 年前と変わらないのどかな感じ。彼が購入して保護した廃墟となった Bodiam 城とか、彼が作った良くわからない塔とか、もう最高。こういうところに隠居して学者生活したいんだよなあ。
This video is short but contains many things I really love and miss about the UK. Beautiful countryside with old buildings. Narration in a crisp British RP accent. A historical figure that influenced science history.
