Angewandte Chemie "Cis–Trans Reisomerization Precedes Reprotonation of the Retinal Chromophore in the Photocycle of Schizorhodopsin 4"
My French is limited so I had to read this by translation but I am very impressed. I too am feeling similar concerns and frustrations these days. These include:- cancelling and attacking Darwin, Fisher etc
- over-valuing indigenous knowledge (e.g. this one)
- dismissing genetic / biological factors
Biology or natural science in general and political or moral decisions are on different layers. The former provides information (e.g. "Lockdown will save X people") but a decision involves values that are outside the scope of science (e.g. "are X lives worth the economic cost?"). Some say studies of genetic/biological differences are harmful because they can be used to justify discrimination. No. Even if a difference is proved to be real, our society can still act against discrimination. A fact itself is neutral. It is the society that defines values. Don't let politics and ideologies distort science.
